Software development company DVT will host two three-day training sessions in May on how to implement Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD). The training is aimed at IT management wanting to adopt agile, experienced IT professionals wanting to adopt disciplined agile strategies, and experienced agilists wanting to increase their understanding of DAD.

DVT recently launched a dedicated agile training and consulting business unit headed by IT industry veteran Themi Themistocleous. The training and the seminar are the first in a series of events aimed at promoting disciplined agile delivery nationally. The presenter will be Mark Lines, co-author with Scott Ambler of the book “Disciplined Agile Delivery: A Practitioner’s Guide to Agile Software Delivery in the Enterprise”, which details their approach to DAD.

“Lines is a software engineer, consultant and global expert on agile development and is the authority on DAD,” says Themistocleous. “DVT has partnered with Scott Ambler + Associates to be able to bring this level of expertise to South Africa and to be able to educate and inform local developers about disciplined agile delivery, which is an important advancement on existing agile development practices. The workshops form part of our drive to become the voice of agile in the country.”

DAD recognises that agile development can present many challenges in more complex enterprise environments and that a more disciplined approach can result in greater development project success. DAD fills in the gaps left by mainstream agile methods by providing guidance on how to effectively plan and kick-start multifaceted projects as well as how to apply a full lifecycle approach, with lightweight milestones, effective metrics and agile governance.

The cost of the three-day workshop is R15 900. “Considering the international knowledge and expertise of the trainer, which will be shared with participants, this is an excellent rate, and it provides a real opportunity for people to understand DAD and how to implement it in their organisations,” says Themistocleous.

He says that companies which are successful at adopting and applying agile techniques effectively are going beyond Scrum, and adopting a truly disciplined approach, a theme that will be at the heart of the workshops.

“This approach is captured in the DAD process decision framework,” Themistocleous says. “The framework incorporates strategies from Scrum, XP, Agile Modelling, Agile Data, Kanban, DevOps, and many more. It shows how to apply these techniques together, for more effective complex development project success. It’s a people-first, learning-oriented hybrid agile approach to IT solution delivery which has a risk-value delivery lifecycle, is goal-driven and enterprise aware, and provides a foundation from which to scale agile. We encourage anyone looking for a working agile solution to attend.”

The Johannesburg training will be held from 20 to 22 May at The Venue, 17 The High Street, Melrose Arch. On 23 May, a seminar on Disciplined Agile Delivery will be held at the same venue.

The Cape Town training will be held from 27 to 29 May at the Winchester Mansions Hotel, Beach Road, Seapoint. On 30 May, a seminar on Disciplined Agile Delivery will be held at The Baltic Room at The Pavilion Conference Centre, V&A Waterfront.
